Youngsters to play against Manchester City in Carling Cup

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that his policy of blooding youngsters into the senior squad for Carling Cup games will continue into the semi-final, despite being drawn against their fierce rivals Manchester City.

It’s been suggested that Ferguson could abandon his youth policy in favour of  his star players for the meeting with United’s local rivals. United fans are keen to deny City the opportunity to win their first trophy in 33 years and are eager to see a healthy amount of experience on the pitch on Wednesday.

However, Ferguson has insisted that he will play the likes of Danny Welbeck, Darron Gibson, Gabriel Obertan and Ritchie De Laet in the first leg of the tie at Eastlands on Wednesday.

“I will stick with the principle of picking young players on Wednesday,”  Ferguson told the Manchester Evening News.

“That is what we have done in the Carling Cup and we are not changing that.”

He added that the youngsters who play in the semi will also be picked for the final against either Aston Villa or Blackburn if United overcome City as a reward for their excellent performances.
