Vidic set for Premier League return
Nemanja Vidic could make only his second Premier League start of the season on Saturday when Manchester United look to snap a three-game winless run against bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield.
The 29-year-old has not kicked a ball for the champions since limping out of the opening-day win at West Brom.
The Old Trafford club captain returned for his country Serbia on Tuesday and missed a second-half penalty in the 1-0 Euro 2012 qualifying defeat to Slovenia.
He later admitted it was “time for a change of generations and for some older players to say goodbye to the Serbian jersey”.
Now, manager Sir Alex Ferguson is considering recalling his no-nonsense central defender in a bid to shore up a leaky rearguard. Those following the football betting online will know the side have shipped plenty of goals this season.
The Scot was unimpressed with the manner of the goals conceded in the 3-1 win over Chelsea last month and the 3-3 Champions League draw with Swiss side Basle and wants Vidic back in for the white-hot atmosphere on Merseyside. Fans will hope to see Man United bowling over their opponents.
Young defenders Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling have performed with credit in Vidic’s absence but Ferguson will know top-four hopefuls Liverpool would relish the chance to expose any frailties at the back and will give his skipper every chance to prove his fitness between now and Saturday lunchtime.
Team-mate Patrice Evra voiced his concern United had become a soft touch of late and stressed it was time to go back to basics.
“I want us to go back to the way we were playing before the Chelsea game,” said the France full-back.
“We have to defend together, be very compact and not give our opponents too many chances. I was disappointed after the Chelsea game because they created a lot of chances and if it had finished 4-4 no-one could have said anything.”
