Should United cash in on Carrick?
The midfield playmaker finished last season how he started it, on the bench and not in the match day squad at times. A very disappointing position for a player who should see a space for him in the England side, given the regularity in which Gareth Barry has been starting England internationals.
The player had a good first season at the club partnering well with the many midfield partners available to the manager. His strengths were his ability to break up play without the fierceness of Keane or Fletcher and his wide range of passing. However he has struggled to claim the mantel of the teams’ first choice midfielder. ( a role in my view held by Fletcher) His four seasons at the club have produced an average of just twenty five games a season. ( in the league) He has never been a regular contributor in the goals department but that was a well known fact before he joined, averaging just over four goals a season.
The guy was outclassed in the Champions League Final against Barcelona, where admittedly he wasn’t the only one but he badly let himself down. That night should have been his finest hour against the best midfielders in the business, they proved themselves (Xavi Iniesta) sadly Carrick did not.
He is someone who can control the midfield but only against much weaker opposition, where he has time on the ball. In theory he is a good foil for the talent of Fletcher but his lack of ability to beat a man or no longer find defence splitting passes, leaves the fans wanting so much more.
To add to that United have Darron Gibson coming through. He looks to be a player living on borrowed time and someone who for my money brings little more than his shooting ability to the show. If he thinks he will have the luxury of standing on the edge of the penalty area for the next ten years waiting for a United player to lay the ball to him ( like Lampard) I think he’s sadly mistaken. He could though provide the impact off the bench United need, instead of leaving an 18 million midfielder on the bench to rot.

He seems to have become complacent. maybe all the success since he joined us has gone to his head and he’s lost the motivation to keep on winning. If that’s true then it’s definitely time to move him on, but midfield is not an area where we’re blessed with creative talent so maybe it’s best to keep him as a squad player rather than a certain starter. I’m a big fan of Darron Gibson and would love to see him get more game time next season. He needs to work on his passing, but he’s got arguably the best long shot in the squad. A goalscoring midfielder is what we’ve been crying out for for years and he could develop into our Lampard or our Gerrard. I’d certainly rather give him the chance to develop, than let Carrick stagnate in the middle of the park.

At best Gibson is a good squad player someone to bring off the bench in a tight game where we cant get close to goal -At 22 yes you can see he has a cracking shot but he is so slow and his vision for passing just isnt there-you cant teach a player to be creative!
We have far better players coming through who I hope get there chance this season-Paul Pogba and Tom Cleverly now they are two players with a big future in front of them with much more to them than a good shot.
As for carrick I think we have a chance to sell to newcastle and i recon they could afford the 10-12mil he is now worth

mr E should take less of it..
how the fek would you cash in on hargraves(?) or even hargreaves (croc), brown (30 year old rookie), ferdibland (crock), owen(crock), neville (old git, for feks sake!! £50k if you’re very lucky), hmmm not looking too bright when you apply the common sense filter is it. may as well try to sell giggs and scholes as well.

I think in many ways people are put off Gibson by his shooting. True, when he was first getting games, he shot almost every time he got the ball, but he’s become a lot more disciplined lately, scored some important goals, and he has a decent range of passing and a good work-rate and seems to be defensively good too. I’m sure he’ll continue to develop and become a great player.

Doubt he will be sold, if we are to play 4-5-1 often then Carrick can be used as the holding man or be used in the playmaking role. In summary he’s effective in low to mid range games but not quite good enough in the top end matches.
