Should United be looking for a new captain?

Should United be looking for a new captain?

The term ‘Club Captain’ is more relevant to a right honourable member of parliament is it not. I simply just believe we need to move on from having Gary Neville as captain because he does not look capable of playing ninety minutes week in week out.  He will still be an important person to have around the training ground there is no doubt about that. However for those young players coming through and being asked to perform, we need a captain who is going to be out there with them.

If Gary could perform to his max week in week out this would not be an issue but you have to ask how influential a captain can be who is not playing. This is a similar theme with other potential candidates for captain like Ryan Giggs (age) and Rio Ferdinand (injury). It is rare to have such a big club with captains who are in place on such a semi permanent basis.  This is not something associated with great United sides of the past.

I was so pleased with the fact this season we have decided to use Patrice Evra for the captains job. He has to be one of the most consistent defenders I have ever seen, his bad day is a lot better than most defenders around. The way we also rely on Patrice to run the left hand side both defensively and from an attacking perspective shows how reliable he is. He has to be a strong candidate.

I don’t subscribe to making Rooney the captain he is almost a leader up there on his own anyway. He seems to have a presence in which his team mates rely on. However I think the pressure that will come with being the official captain is unnecessary. So I would instantly rule out the option of selecting Rooney as a candidate for captain.

The next candidate has to be Nemanja Vidic he leads by example and his no nonsense approach will inspire his team mates. However you have to wonder whether his English and communication would be a potential problem. He could be a player who is simply better off sticking to his already important role as the lynchpin of the back line.

The final candidate is the formidable Darren Fletcher who has gained a reputation as our first choice central midfielder. He is completely at home chasing down the most talented ball players in the league, getting in their faces and making things difficult for them. I do however have the concern that I don’t think it would enhance his game and may add extra pressure to a player who is very settled with his role at the moment.

My final verdict for Captain is Rio Ferdinand if he is fit, if he is not Patrice Evra.

  1. When looking for a capt,it shud neva cross anyones mind to settle for a striker. The modern game dictates that a centre half or still better a defender are the king pins to look at.At O.T, i wud settle for Rio

  2. I think you’re wrong when you say that you think making Fletch captain would add extra pressure to him, because he’s been captaining Scotland on and off for the past 3 years, and was made full time captain last year, and that doesn’t seem to have affected him at all.

His rise to a top-level midfielder has coinicided with him being given a position of authority in the Scotland team, and I feel that he would be the perfect choice as captain for us, especially because he’s United through and through, having come from the academy.

  3. A really good point you make there.
Rio should be promoted to club captain but i dont think that will happen until the end of the next season when Neville, Scholes and Giggs are likely to retire.

Main reason i think for that are Pique’s comments on how Giggs, Neville and Scholes run trainings most of the time and they are highly respected by all the players. Because of that everytime they start they have earnt the captains armband.

All three have been great servants for MUFC (their only club; which is such a rarity in modern football) and they embody MUFC.

  4. Yeah, I tend to agree, but I don’t think Rio is all that much better of a selection than Nev either. He hasn’t been that reliable lately either.
