Strikers are key to getting to Wembley
Manchester United’s assistant manager Mike Phelan believes the key to United’s Carling Cup survival lies within the strikers.
Some ridiculous refereeing sees United trail their bitter rivals 2-1 heading into the second leg of their semi final, but Phelan believes United have the quality to overturn the deficit and book heir place at Wembley.
“We want to keep some consistency in our game. At City there were signs that Manchester United are on the way forward. If we can stick the ball in the back of the net we are in business.
“It will be intense next week. It should be intense. We are at home. Our supporters will want that. We should be okay as long as we have a fully fit team.
“The players are disappointed and that is a good sign. They should be disappointed because they know they could have come away from the game with more than a 2-1 defeat.
“People keep saying the Carling Cup is not on anyone’s priority list. But it is a cup game. When you get to the semi-final of a cup you want to get to the final. Both clubs are desperate for that.
“We have been in many and we want to taste another. It is all to play for. We are pleased we put on a performance. We didn’t score the goals that we wanted to. But all being well we can do the right thing on the night next week.”
