Shilton: Foster needs to go on loan
Ben Foster should go out on loan or risk missing out on the World Cup, according to goalkeeping legend Peter Shilton.
The Manchester united ‘keeper was given a chance to stake a claim for the number one jersey at Old Trafford when Edwin van der Sarbroke a finger, but a number of high profile blunders saw the Dutchman reclaim his starting spot with ease after recovering from injury.
It got worse for Foster when Tomasz Kuszczak seemingly overtook him to become the deputy to van der Sar. Kuszczak’s recent outings in the first team suggest he’s made more of his limited chances than Foster did with his, and Shilton believes the lack of game time could mean Foster isn’t selected for Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad.
“I think it is in the interest of both parties to let him out on loan,” Shilton said.
“Ben Foster is very keen to be part of that World Cup squad and even be England’s number one at the competition, that’s every player’s dream.
“I think if he was sat in the reserves for a long time it would be very demoralising so hopefully common sense will prevail and Sir Alex will let him out.
“He would always have the opportunity to recall him if there’s any major issues or injuries.”
“Obviously, he has the ability to be playing regularly in the Premier League so from his point of view, and Man United’s point of view, he needs to be playing regularly at some point. Hopefully that will happen.”
