Rooney: My injury will help us win World Cup

Wayne Rooney believes the injury that ruled him out of key Manchester United fixtures at the end of the season could have a silver lining after all.

The United striker hopes the rest he has had will reinvigorate him for the World Cup in South Africa this Summer.

England odds are currently 11/1 on Partybets World Cup to end 44 years of hurt since lifting the trophy in 1966, and that is due in no small part to Rooney’s fantastic form for Manchester United.

“Of course I always want to score, but if it doesn’t happen I’m glad it’s in a friendly and not in the World Cup,” he said. “Hopefully I’m saving them up for South Africa.

“It has been a long season for everyone and, of course, players can feel jaded. But I’m quite fortunate because I haven’t trained a lot in the last six weeks.

“I will have another full week’s training in Austria and I felt good against Mexico.

“I had a bit of a stiff neck after the match, but that should pass. Fingers crossed, my break out injured this season will be of benefit during the World Cup.

“I have trained in every session with England and there is no problem with my ankle. You have to hold back sometimes in tackles in training. It can be difficult, but you must be careful not injure yourself or your teammates.”

If Rooney has really said this then he does not know what he is talking about. He plays well when he has been playing all the time and doesn’t do so when he has laid off for some time. He should know by now that he is a different sort of player.
