Report: Manchester United 3 – 0 Wolves

Manchester United beat Wolves 3-0 last night to draw level on points with Chelsea at the top of the table and it couldn’t have been easier.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy had all but conceded defeat before the match had started, resting ten of his first team players ahead of the weekend clash with Burnley.

Goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann was the only survivor of the team that beat Spurs at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

United got out of the traps early and Wayne Rooney tested Hahnemann with a couple of good efforts, but it wasn’t as easy as it should have been for United.

Indeed the opening goal was a self inflicted wound on Wolves’ part, as Ronald Zubar inexplicably handled Darron Gibson‘s corner to give away a penalty, which Rooney duely dispatched to give the hosts the lead.

Gibson added another element to his game by showing that he can deliver excellent corners. One of which landed on the head of Nemanja Vidic who powered a header at the ‘keeper. Hahnemann got a hand to it but couldn’t prevent it crossing the line.

United were strolling through the game at this point without particularly impressing anybody. Wolves reluctance to attack gave a sort of pedestrian feel to the game.

Two of those pedestrians, Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia suddeny sprung to life after 65 minutes. Berbatov flicked the ball behind him and into the path of the oncoming Valencia who powered the ball past Hahnemann to make it 3-0.

United eased to 3 points, but against a very much weakened Wolves side, United fans will feel the game should have looked far easier than it did.
