What prompted Carragher’s change of heart?
Jamie Carragher’s dramatic u-turn on his England involvement is very convenient to say the least.
His retirement was bizarre in itself. After all, how can you retire from a job you don’t have? He wasn’t close to being first choice with superior defenders John Terry and Rio Ferdinand ahead of him, and he wasn’t even certain to be 3rd choice.
It seemed he had accepted that he wasn’t good enough, so he spat his dummy out and announced his retirement.
Then when approached in April about a possible return to the England setup, he insisted he’d turn down the opportunity because it would be unfair to those who had helped England qualify.
“I’d love to work with Capello, but I’d say no. I read an interview with Alessandro Nesta who’s been asked to come back for Italy and he said he couldnt because he’d be taking someones spot who’d helped get them there. I feel the same. You can’t just walk in when others have put the graft in”
However, the Liverpool defender has changed his tune less than a month later. England are heading for the World Cup and Liverpool are heading for mid table mediocrity, and Carragher will now take his place in the 30 man provisional squad, despite playing no part in qualifying.
“The World Cup and the Champions League are the highest levels of football,” said Carragher.
“I am not getting any younger, we have no Champions League next season and I am keen to work under Fabio Capello.”
So what has prompted this change of heart? The realization that liverpool are only going downhill? Or has Carragher become a glory hunter?

hhhhmmmm…..wasn’t good enough…..was that why Paul Scholes retired early……and as for him coming back into the fold…….those superior defenders you speak of, in Terry….has had a horrible time of it lately and could prove that he is out of form, and as for Rio, he has played more games on his playstation recently than in real time, so no certainties there and Capello came knocking on his door again….it’s not like Carragher begged to come back…..you numpty…..fact is Capello wanted him from the start, and Capello still wants him…..what does that tell you……
How pathetic.
We only have to look at your last article, “Scholes snubs Capello”, to see how differently you would have written this piece if Jamie Carragher was a Manchester United player rather than a Liverpool one.
Get behind the player, get behind the squad and put aside your childish “oh he plays for them, not us” attitude.
I don’t think I have ever read such a colossal waste of time as that! Seriously I want my 2 minutes back! Apart from the fact that it’s far too opinionated to be anywhere near the truth, your opinions are clearly testicles! I mean your clearly a manc, but rating Rio as a ‘superior’ defender is parp for even your rose tinted specticles, surely you have to be fit to be classed as a defender let alone a ‘superior’ one! 21 games this season and a Capello rating of 6.5, that’s 0.5 less than Jamie Carragher (less superior for those that don’t understand) who has played 52 games this season proving that not only does Capello think he is better than Rio, but he is (now my maths may be slightly wrong) 220% more reliable.
So in essence… please Stretty, stop stealing our oxygen!
Still not good enough now. Hopefully he doesnt make the final 23.
Carragher is better than Ferdinand?
Liverpool fans’ delusions sink to new levels of hilarity.
Next week on Scouse weekly: Benitez better than Fergie!
@Harry: I don’t support England and don’t really care how they do at the World Cup. As long as the United players come home injury free I couldn’t care less.
What I do care about is hypocrisy. One minute he’s saying he can’t go to the World Cup because he’d be taking the place of a player who helped them qualify, the next minute he’s accepting his place in the provisional squad without a thought of the player who’s missing out. He played no part in qualification and doesn’t deserve to be there. I’d be saying the same if it was a United player, probably even moreso because I’d rather they stayed home this Summer and had a rest to be ready for next season.
At no point above has anybody said that Carrager is better than Rio, at all… what has been said that Capello rates him better (in his controversial rating system) and he is (FACT <- I wanted to avoid that word, lol) more reliable, and considering Rio is a good player, it says a lot for Jamie. And I, along with any other proper Englishman that has a pair, want our best possible squad and team out there. And I should have guessed that a Manchester United fan wasn’t going to be English, how silly of me.
I am English. I live in Manchester. I just don’t care much for England seeing as every time they inevitably crash out of any competition it’s a United player that’s blamed.
Have you never seen the ‘United > England’ banner that follows United around everywhere? It sums up the way a lot of our fans feel towards the national team.
Fair enough, it does say alot about the fans that follow United everywhere… no pride
We have pride in Manchester United.
it’s hard to be proud of England when 90% of its fans spend the entire season booing our players.
Liverpool fans don’t know the meaning of being proud of their team. We can clearly see why. Do they hope England do well so that they forget their SHAMEFUL season? If you think Jamie is better than Rio how come succesive England coaches can’t see it. Delusion is the word that sum up the scouser. Like they say Gerrard is better than Scholes. The only player who can make the united squad from anfield is Torres, the rest are just crap. Prove me wrong!!
well obbviously your bias has gotten the better of you. Certainly I would agree that he would not be considered had the origional pairing been fit and reliable and also the players who were in the squad initially been available. Since your mention that he is taking another players place I would like to ask you who that player is?
lescott, brown, neville, dont seem to remember jags playing many games for england or indeed anyone this year has king played more than 3 games in a row in the last 5 years?
point being Carra has the ability, experience and has played well all season.
wonder what your opinion is with regards to a certain Roy Keane whos principles forced him to ditch his country then return to the EXACT same conditions after he got over his strop!!!
