Nani shows Fergie he’s capable of
Portuguese winger Nani showed Sir Alex Ferguson exactly what he’s capable of today with a masterclass in wing play for Manchester United.
He had been out of favour for much of the season, and together with a long injury meant he’d struggled to make an impact on the first team. But today he showed the manager exactly what he’s been missing.
Playing on the right wing, he was a danger to the hull defence every time he was in possession. His crossing was excellent and if not for the profligate finishing of Michael Owen and Park Ji Sung in particular, he’d have bagged himself half a dozen assists.
Whether this will earn him an extended run in the team remains to be seen, with Ferguson seemingly favouring Summer signing Antonio Valencia for the right wing spot.
He will most likely end up in his usual left wing position, but if the United boss learnt anything today it’s that when played on the right wing Nani can be absolutely devastating to the opposition’s back line.

Almost like Ronaldo,i hope he can maintain every game like how he played today
Nani is simply the best! He proved it to Ferguson!
Well Nani has played on the right wing for United before but not too impressively, so the quality of opposition today should be taken into account. But this was much better from him today so hopefully he can show more of this kind of form for the rest of the season when he is picked.
Nani was fantastic today…We should let him play…he’s only 23 and we need players with that profile…there’s no any reason to keep him on the bench, just let him play…our play was too slowly today with lots of horizontal passes, boring backing balls to the last line, playing in the edge of their possible drawn goal…We have to be much more faster, all time vertical attacking, and we need one good and aggressive middle field player to feed Wazza and Owen, Diouf also…I hope that we will the same in Wednesday against hated Shitty…Long live United…fu*k off Glazers, stinky cunts!!!
nani was class n he proved it 2 ferguson that he can replace ronaldo we would like 2 c him more in first team action
Well lious nani did very well today and i want him to do more.
Nani was immense today, I’m so glad everyone else picked up on it!
I very much agree with Sam here… we are slow and play horizontally as we cannot pass the ball. T
hankfully Nani saved the day and terrorized hull. He pretty much created everything today and crowned it with a fantastic cross for Rooney to score. We haven’t seen this kind of crossing since Beckham!!! If Valencia could manage crosses we would be in great shape.
Fletcher was dreadful and never plays the ball forward and ruins the flow of the game. I was very disappointed with him and I don’t rate him a starter. He contributes nothing offensively and struggled defensively. Park isn’t good enough… I don’t know what has happened to him, but when you’re not good enough vs hull, then you’re in trouble.
This is a perfect match for Scholes and he did well and was a creative spark, something that we’re not used to to these days from anyone in the team. Even Evra is ineffective playing with Park on his side…
I really hope that Fergie starts Owen with Roo. It’s just the best solution, especially as Berba is injured. Diouf is maybe a man for Preston or Leeds, not United… he’s not good enough and I hope we sell him soon (However, I really hope I’m mistaken here, but watching him play in Norway definetely didn’t convince me)
Horizontal? Anyone who watched the game knows this isn’t true. ESPN showed that we played 78% of play through the centre and not the wing. Still think that we played horizontal? We played a different way today and won 4-0. Still not happy? Fergie was tactically superb today, and added an extra dimension. FFS we are top of the league and that game in hand nonsense will all be sorted out in the next 3-4 weeks with the big 3′s fixtures. When Barca tactically played us off the park in Rome, people blamed fergie. Why not praise him this time for breaking down a tough defensive 11? Hull are hard to break down and we hit 4.
@ TNT – To say fletcher was dreadful is a joke in itself. He, Rooney, Nani and Owen were exceptional (apart from Owen’s shooting he was really hungry.)
I expect Nani will be 50-50 for the rest of the season. When he gets subbed he takes it personally. He shouldnt. Did Owen? No. If Nani keeps doing what he did, he’ll be fine. He just needs consistency and more development. He’s got the talent.
Am with marks all the way
Just seen the highlights of the match. Very impressed with Nani. Hope he can carry that into his next game. Or carry on drinking whatever he has been drinking. Praise where praise is due, lads. We played some good stuff against Hull.
Rio back and Vidic not long away – this could be the lift we need. Here’s to City on Wednesday.
Well Mark… the 78% passing game works vs hull, but at 1-nil we could’ve thrown away the game. The game was open for more than 80 minutes and it shouldn’t be. We did create chances, but not that many. Hull are going down and that was apparent in this game!
The statistics you’re referring to just proves that less of that passing should’ve gone through central midfield so that we can be more effective and play the United way! Fast, fluid and ferocious!!!
Fletchers passing wasn’t good and he was no danger offensively and didn’t really dominate defensively. He should vs teams like hull, but I recognize that he’s contributed plenty the last couple of seasons. I just don’t think he is the key for ruling England and Europe…
Quite noticable that Nani really upped his game! In fairness with the lad, he plays better when he doesn’t try hard to impress with his showboating skills and his fancy footwork on the wing. I noticed he was told to play first time balls like Valencia, and it proved pivital! Considering Rooney took all the limelight with his four goals, most credit should go to Nani for creating two of those 4 goals, a very good Ronaldo like free kick and a peach of a cross. I guess it took Ronaldo a few years to learn how to make his game simple but yet most effective. Im sure Nani will come to the same sense as that and he really showed signs against Hull! Hope the run continues. If hes consistent enough, Nani and Valencia on each wing should be able to keep us retain the premier league..only if Rooney is scoring lol
I do not like to use statistic to explain anything! Statistic is known as a science discipline that says everything and prove nothing
. I think in generally , we play too much horizontally! We have a lot of passes in the middle from one to each other, on the edge of risk, esp when we are in similar situation as at last match vs Hull, when the match is open whole time, from 8th to 82th minute! That’s a problem, whole time, keep us nervous and feared of drawn result instead of attacking, playing football as we always expect from the Great United, fast, beautiful, fluid with famous United charm, offensive…I am scared of these backing balls to Edwin, lots of unnecessary touches in the last line, in the front of unprotected area of our goal, risk balls and I would rather provide much more passes in vertical, to Wazza in the middle of attack line, to our wingers, to M.Owen…to shoot from all positions, because, We are United and we should stay! We are not boring shit, Barcelona!!!
