Flashback: Man City 0 – 3 Man Utd – United fans take over Maine Road
Ahead of tonight’s encounter at Old Trafford we thought we’d remind you of another famous derby match of years gone by. The day Manchester United fans took over Maine Road in September 1985. United filled about 70% of the ground in that match, which goes some way to dispelling City’s beliefs that all United fans are glory hunters, seeing as there was no glory back then.
Even at a time when we were relatively unsuccessful, we were still bringing more fans to their own stadium than they were, which actually reflects the red/blue split in Manchester quite well. 70% red 30% blue sounds about right. Just watch when goals go in at both ends, all you can see are reds, reds and more reds.
On the pitch, it was Bryon Robson, Arthur Albiston and Mike Duxbury who did the damage as United eased to a 3-0 win.
Enjoy the show.

Hi Stretty
Great article. Do you know how these highlights came to light as thought there was a TV blackout for league football during the start of the 85/86 season?
Really interesting that there were more United fans in the ground. Do you know why that happened?
Final Q! Do you know or do you know where I can find the team lineups for that game?
Best wishes
Adam
Hi Adam, sorry for the late reply.
United regularly took over Maine Road in those days. I was only a baby myself so can’t really comment on why, but it’s nice to look back on video footage that proves Manchester has always been mostly red.
No idea about the highlights, but you can find lineups for all United’s games on the Stretford End website. just click on the season yo uwant, then the game yo uwant and it’ll give you the lineup. http://www.stretfordend.co.uk/seasons/
This was my first ever United game. Not a bad way to start.
