Ferguson’s comments give fans little to look forward to.

After a poor season simply based on the fact the fans have been left thinking what could have been, with regards to the Blackburn and Bayern games. Sir Alex has done little to inspire those deeply worried about the future of the team, given the assumed financial constraints of the United cheque book. I think you could argue that without Wayne Rooney the team would struggle to make the top four.

This season there is going to be huge reliance on Nani, who needs to be looking for twenty goals in all competitions as the teams total goals from midfield last season is very poor indeed. Valencia who has been good needs to develop his game to the United standard. I often believe that he simply crosses it and does not aim to pick people out hence the two goals scored from his deliveries in the second leg against Bayern. He also outright blankly refuses to take players on, which has severely hampered the threat of the United attacking unit.

To not have a United team which is capable of getting in behind the defence and exposing them is not the United way. It has stopped Berbatov from being a threat because when he gets the ball the runs are not being made so he can release players down the flanks. When he was at Spurs Aaron Lennon was getting in behind the opposition defence causing problems and this made it easier for Berbatov. It would give him more space and he would not have to work his way past an entire back four.

Another obvious problem is the fact United do not threaten through the middle from the midfield. The squad possesses not one single player who can drive through the middle at pace cutting opposition players out of the game. This is such a vital weapon that United have missed out on for many years now. Admittedly there are not many who can drive through the middle naming only players like Kaka, Fabregas, Gerrard and Essien, who are capable of doing so.

The only place I feel confident about is the backline for one more season I think the formula of Van Der Sar, Vidic and Rio will be ok. Although I think there are always going to be worries about Rio’s fitness. We have an embarrassment of riches at right full back and for my money have the best left back in the world.

Upfront another man is needed and I am not sure whether it is beneficial to keep both Michael Owen and Berbatov. They both only seem capable of holding down the third striker position i.e the automatic striker substitution. For both players their performance won’t have been to the level they have wanted hence leaving room for another striker to come in and take the second striker role. I believe both players this season were capable of scoring twenty goals with the chances they had.

So we are set for another bumpy ride as United fans with the World Cup perhaps taking our minds off the worry. But Fergie’s got something up his sleeve hasn’t he pleasssssse!!

  1. SAF’s New York comments probably mean one of three things:

    1) The Reds are stony broke OR

    2) The board are saving the transfer kitty for a new manager OR

    3) Sell out by the Glazers.

    Red since ’48.

  2. Best we can hope for is Silva and J Cole, which if that happens would definitely upgrade the squad. Whether it will match what City, Chelsea, Barca and Real do is another matter!

  3. I think the comments about Valencia are ridiculous. He always takes players on and then puts in a cross – in fact that’s pretty much all he does. And for a poor crosser, he certainly seems to get a lot of assists – compare him to other supposedly great crossers of the ball, like Stewart ‘No Assists’ Downing – whose crosses make a nice little pretty arc directly to the striker – by which time he’s surrounded by defenders. Valencia hits the ball early and into the most dangerous area, realising that the striker can move into that position and score, as Rooney has done so often.

  4. Also, expecting Nani to get 20 goals a season is a bit ridiculous – there aren’t many wingers in the world capable of that. And as for driving runs, we do have one player capable of doing that, who is often overlooked – Anderson.
