Fergie: Patience was key to Portsmouth thrashing

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has echoed the words of Patrice Evra in praising the way the team played yesterday.

United put 5 goals past Portsmouth without reply, thanks to strikes from Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov, as well as two own goals.

The United boss believes patience played a big part in the result.

“We had a lot of pressure and possession off the ball but we were patient enough,” Ferguson said.

“That’s important when teams come and sit in the way they did here today. Portsmouth were there to make it difficult but we got the goal just before half-time.

“We went looking for goals and managed to get three more, the one from Berbatov was brilliant.”

United now head the Premier League table by a point, although Chelsea do have a game in hand against Arsenal today.
