Decision to pull out of Ljajic transfer justified?

Serbian youngster Adem Ljajic has agreed terms with Serie A side Fiorentina, after his move to Manchester United collapsed.

United pulled out of the deal in early December, citing his lack of development as a reason for not wanting to pay the pre-agreed transfer fee.

Ljajic refuted the claims, saying that the reason he couldn’t move to United was because he had trouble obtaining a work permit.

It was thought that United had missed out on a great young talent, but after Ljajic agreed terms with Fiorentina it seems Sir Alex Ferguson may have been right not to pursue the deal.

If Ljajic had such huge potential then all of Europe’s top clubs would have been clamouring to get his signature, but as it happens, the only clubs competing with Fiorentina to sign the 18 year old were Russian clubs, suggesting his future isn’t as bright as first thought.

Whether Ferguson was right to pull out of the move, only time will tell, but for the moment it looks like his judgement may have been spot on as usual.

  1. Only problem with that is that Mike Phelan specifically stated that we only didn’t sign him due to work permit considerations, not because he wasn’t good enough.

  2. You know that Fiorentina plays in the CL? There are also other rules for players in Italy! Adem has a great future

  3. Italian sides can sign one non-work permit player so they could sign him where we couldn’t, Fergie will keep tabs and get him in a couple of years when he can get a permit, if he is good enough.

  4. Just because he’s signing for what you deem to be a smaller club than United doesn’t mean he isn’t a very good prospect. Several top clubs (including United) passed up the opportunity to sign Stevan Jovetic, who also joined Fiorentina, and he’s gone on to become one of the most promising players in the world right now.

Judge Ljajic when he gets his chance in Italy and when you see him play, not on the basis that just because he didn’t transfer to a major club means he can’t be very good.
