City star gets his facts wrong ahead of United clash
It looks like the controversy of Michael Owen‘s injury time winner against Manchester City just won’t go away. There was enough fuss right after it happened, but for City players to still be banging on about it 3 months later shows us just how much it still hurts them.
“We’ve only lost twice all season, despite everything that has been said and written about us, and that was one of them, in the 99th minute at Old Trafford,” Shay Given told The Times.
The official goal time was 95:27. More than three and a half minutes shy of the 99th minute.
The Irishman admits it took him a while to get over it. He went on to rewrite history by claiming Manchester City played well.
“It took me a good few weeks, even a couple of months, to get it out of my system,” he continued.
“We played so well that day and for them to get such a late, late goal – it was very difficult for everyone to swallow really.”
It seems Given has forgotten about United’s total domination of the second half. We had more possession, more shots, more corners, more territorial advantage, and the most important statistic of all – more goals!
The only reason the scoreline was so close is because Rio Ferdinand and Ben Foster decided to leave their brains at home that day. The scoreline flattered City when we could easily have won by 3 or 4 goals, such was our dominance.
And hopefully we’ll reignite that spirit on Wednesday and bounce back from the Leeds result by thrashing City.

you’re forgetting the time added on in the first half
Oh the irony, you have a manager who whinges EVERY single time they get beat about the referee, he should have had a touchline ban yet again for his little old man rant the other night.
Just imagine, getting knocked out of the FA cup by a far superior Dirty Leeds, then ol’ Baconface playing his ‘Star’ 11 at Eastlands and getting beat 2-0, Tevez scoring the winning goal.
Its coming so be prepared for Baconfaces dance of anger to the fourth official, followed by Mike Phelan being wheeled out post-match to churn out some cliches, then the final cherry on the top, all the plastics laughing at City because we are taking the Carling cup seriously.
given the first half stoppage time it was the 99th minute. hush.
Dont be stupid bellamy was ripping ferdinand all day.And shown how poor of a defender rio is without his pace. What a disgrace fergie was when beaten by a third division club. Didnt shake hands,no interview stormed off like a big baby very poor loser. As for domination what game were you watching, tevez could of had a hat trick.I hope we get fergie time when we are smashing you out of another cup.
Ohhh you poor things reading some exaggeration from a City player. Not like SAF ever indulges in any hyperbole either !! “It’s an insult to the game and players that 5 minutes.” And that’s just from his last game.
I do agree with you that it was total domination in the second half – but you only scored in extra time and it is a game of two halves and we played well in the first half. As you all go on it is not the money that plays and it was early in the season. Most United fans agree this is the poorest team you have had for years. It will be interesting to see where you go from here.
I am a lifelong City fan but am happy to confess to watching us as a fan and then watching you for the skill and good football – the Cantona and Cole and other years. This is not true now though.
Yo Stretty
I bet you my yearly salary, that we go into the final… that’s about half a million US$. If you don’t win, you must supply the same value to me…. easy! Ur confident right?
Stretty gets his facts wrong, because he is a rag, and a muppet… oh, they all are!!!
Bragging about money on the internet must make you feel really big Tim. I bet your cock is massive as well. (No pun intended)
Stretty… You got something right
Simple fact is that Man U fans are crapping themselves because most of them have never had to deal with this situation.
I have a couple of Red mates, and they openly admit that they are a little afraid of the consequences… and, in addition the massive debt hanging over their club is a worrying factor
it was an insult to football

“given the first half stoppage time it was the 99th minute. hush.”
G whether or not the amount of stoppage time was justified, and whether you are red or blue, the amount added in the first half is of no consequence to the second. Clearly you understand how stoppage time works. Does anyone else want to explain?
you dont have to have all the possesion shots or corners etc to play well … u scum got beat with a leeds team which i thought on the day played very good football although united had most of the game ? … dominating a game doesnt mean the oposition is poor …
the game altogether with first half stopages would be taken into the 99th minute !
LMFAO, YOU UNITED FANS ARE PATHETIC, I WILL SPEAK FOR ALL CITY FANS AND CONFIRM THAT WE COULD NOT GIVE A FLYING DUCK ABOUT OWENS GOAL OR THE EXTRA TIME YOU OFTEN GOT GIFTED TO YOU BY CORRUPT REFEREE’S.
FERGY WAS HURT WHEN THE REFEREE NEVER ALLOWED YOU EXTRA TIME AGAINST LEEDS AND LEEDS UNITED PUT THE FIRST NAIL IN UNITED COFFIN.
THE ONLY REAL IMPORTANT THING TO A CITY FAN IS TO SEE CITY AT THE TOP ANS SEE UNITED FALL, ANY RESULT THAT DOES OR DOES NOT GO OUR WAY WE WILL TAKE IN OUR STRIDE.
LETS SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU STEP FOOT IN EASTLANDS ON THE 6TH.
CITY, SUPER CITY, MANCHESTER CITY, WE LOVE YOU.
I can smell your fear stretty.
The only thing I was actually scared of was City ruining football with ridiculous transfer fees. Fortunately the biggest stars turned you down to move to big clubs and then Real Madrid started spending crazy money, so you haven’t quite ruined it yet, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.
700 million in debt players wanting out and your more intrested in city , wake up and smell the coffee theres a blue moon rising ! ps who you glory hunters going to support when your a run of the mill mid table team .
Can`t argue too much with this, and as a City supporter, the big thing that gutted me at this game was how much we stood off. We did the same at Anfield, and it disappoints because we`re well capable of beating United and Liverpool. I agree with Cityblue. It didn`t matter how long the game went on for, the point was we didn`t protect the bloody hard work we`d done.
I`m sure all you reds know all about momentum, and the huge part it can play in football as you`ve experienced it first hand, but the momentum is now with City. Fergie will do everything he can to avoid being knocked out of two cups in a matter of days, but I can`t see this going any way other than for City for the simple reason that is we have more quality overall CTID
Stretty… a spot of neck winding would be good for you
Stretty, serious questions for you. I`ll take the dig about ruining football on the chin, and I won`t remind you how you had more to spend than almost everyone on the planet for a hell of a stint, but my serious question is this.
What do you honestly think will happen to United if they can`t find a miracle re jig of their finances?
Players are like rats as far as I`m concerned with few exceptions that remain loyal, and they also side step clubs that have financial issues. There are for example, reports now that perhaps Torres will want out if the bin dippers “fail to match his ambitions”, even though 2/3 months ago he was “proud” his daughter was learning scouse English (what a prat).
I don`t honestly see too many wanting out of United just yet, but the season after next when there`s been no investment in top drawer players, and the capability of seriously challenging becomes more obviously impossible what then?
That`s no dig Stretty. Just one supporter asking another for an honest opinion.
“What do you honestly think will happen to United if they can`t find a miracle re jig of their finances?”
Worst case scenario is we’ll go into administration, drop down the leagues and become a nothing team. The plus side would be that the glory hunters would fuck off and we’d get a proper atmosphere back inside OT, and Glazer and his rabble would be gone.
Best case scenario is we’ll get a rich sugar daddy to buy Glazer out. If that had happened 5 years ago there would probably have been protests about it, like there were when Glazer took over, but if it happened now I think the majority of fans would accept it just to get rid of the debt burden on the club.
Big difference from you lot though, couldn’t wait to pull your trousers down and take 12 inches off whichever billionaire came first.
I think squad investment is a must for us over the next few years. It’s been a while since we’ve spent any serious money. Our net spend since Glazer took over is about 5 million quid, and that’s not per season, that’s the grand total of the 5 years he’s been here. The simple fact is that if we don’t spend money, we won’t be winning trophies and it’ll affect our ability to pay back the ever increasing debts. It comes down to that old adage that you have to speculate to accumulate, so if Glazer wants to pay off the interest on the debt by winning trophies then he first has to open his pockets and let Fergie buy some players.
P.S. Sorry for the delay in approving your comment. I’ve been out building snowmen.
Just a quick fact for you….
Since 1992 (the year when Man Utd started to win things after a VERY LONG wait) the have spent £396m which includes 6 British record signings…..
City have spent £301m with 2 British record signings.
Before Anelka at a paltry £13m by Keegan, City’s record signing was Lee Bradbury at £3m
Before any one harps on about buying success, best do their homework first.
I think that Man United have had their fair share of money, especially when the majority of their cash was only raised from when Martin Edwards floated the club on the Stock Market.
Now it has come to a point where Champions Lge Qualification is a MUST for Utd or the financial impact will be felt.
A smattering of “oh why wasnt it us the Arabs bought” always comes to the forefront.
The difference is that our money was earned through having a solid business off the pitch as well as success on the pitch.
The reason we started to win things in 1992 was because we brought in a top class manager and lots of youth players came through the ranks and blended well with the older players in the squad. We didn’t buy our success. we prolonged it by being successful on and off the pitch.
Your so called “facts” are wrong anyway.
United’s figures:
Bought: £410,350,000
Sold: £275,565,000
Nett: £134,785,000
City’s figures:
Bought: £396,110,000
Sold: £102,553,000
Nett: £293,557,000
Only Chelsea have spent more than you and it’s not just since the billionaires came in either. Villa, Spurs, Liverpool, City and Chelsea have all outspent us.
The reason people now hate City is because your club doens’t deserve success. Your fans think you have a God given right to be at the top of the ree, but success is meant to be earned through hard work and dedication, not via sugar daddy’s like Abramovich and whatsisface who owns City. That’s why any success you do have will always be hollow., exactly like Chelsea’s is.
That won’t matter to your fans though and I can see why. If I’d been starved of success for 34 years I’m sure I’d take a trophy win no matter how it came so my message to you is enjoy it while you can. Hopefully the sheikh gets bored soon and puts you lot into administration. Never has a set of fans been less deserving of success than the vast majority of you Munich chanting bitters.
Whether there was 1,3,5,10 or whatever stoppage time, it was there for both sides and it was City who conceded. So what on earth are all you bitters complaining about. Just like another contributor wrote, had Foster and Ferdinand not made those stupid mistakes, the result would have shown the total superiority of the REDS.
The right to be at the top is earned not bought and history is against you. Look at Chelsea with all the Russian money they spent the last years, all they have to show for it are a few championships and trophies, when their target was the CL. Success is not bought. As for shitty with all their riches, they shall always be looked at as a small club unlike their next door Red neighbours. By the way, what exactly did Mancini achieve in the CL with Inter?
