Carrick: First goal was vital

Michael Carrick praised the way the team performed against West Ham today, despite an injury crisis threatening to derail their title hopes.

The midfielder was deployed at centre half for most of the game after coming on as a substitute for the injured Gary Neville and managed to keep a clean sheet alongside Wes Brown.

He also acknowledged the importance of Paul Scholes‘ goal seconds before the half time whistle.

“I thought we played quite well to be honest it’s a tough place to come,” Carrick told the BBC after the game.

“We were well aware that they’ve not had a great start to the season but we were well aware of the danger they pose and obviously to win like we have is very pleasing considering the amount of injuries and everything we have.”

“The goal before half time gave us a great foothold in the game,” he added.
