£60 million and still no value? Pull the other one Fergie!

Following the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid last Summer, Manchester United received a world record transfer fee of £80 million. Of that £80 million, only around a quarter of it was reinvested into the squad.

Antonio Valencia was brought in for £16 million. Gabriel Obertan arrived from Bordeaux for £3 million. Michael Owen signed no a free transfer, while Mame Biram Diouf and Paul Poga’s fees are undisclosed, but thought to be nominal. If you assume Ferguson has been given no extra funds, that leaves around £60 million.

Sir Alex Ferguson has repeated the same mantra since last Summer, that there’s “no value” in the transfer market. But it’s a mantra that’s becoming increasingly hard to believe for many United fans.

Was Ferguson worried about “value” when he signed Dimitar Berbatov for £30.75 million? Or OWen Hargreaves for £17 million? Or Michael Carrick for £18.6 million? Or Rio Ferdinand or Wayne Rooney for around £30 million each?

He has repeatedly broke the bank to secure the signatures of star players in the past and there was never any mention of “value”.

We’re Manchester United, the fee is always higher when we come calling, but we’ve always paid what was required to bring the player to Old Trafford. Why is Ferguson suddenly obsessed with “value”?

My guess, and the guess of many fans, is that the Glazer’s have used the majority of the Ronaldo money to pay off some of the interest on the huge debts they’ve placed on the club and that Ferguson’s budget for new players is close to zero.

But no doubt he’ll keep peddling the same “no value in the market” mantra and hope that some of the more gullible fans believe it.

Where do you think the Ronaldo money has gone?

  1. The debt which the Glazers put against the club is probably in the back of Fergie’s mind. Plus he will refuse out of principal to pay silly money in day’s climate, must be the Scot in him!

  2. Would SAF sit quietly while he was told he had no funds? Would he lie for the Glazers? I don’t think so. He knows if he was sacked, they’d be lynched.

There’s more to it than we think. Obviously SAF is satisfied with what he’s been told.

The Glazers have always coughed up the cash when needed and to be honest, I don’t want us to pay £60m for Villa, Ribery or anyone. I’d pay that for Iniesta and that’s it.

If Fergie wants a player and he isn’t allowed funds… let’s see if he stays quiet.

  3. I think he’s being honest. It’s not worth overspending. Fergie’s being wise not diving in and blowing the cash. He was willing to spend on Benzema and was convinced he could do well for United but he blew us off. I think he’s waiting until he’s sure about other additions and doesn’t want to be ripped off. If we had 60m to spend and blew 40m on someone who didn’t perform we’d get hammered by the press and they go to town ripping us to pieces so that money has got to be spent wisely on the right person at the right price. Good on Fergie for sticking to his guns and not panic buying. Don’t forget we’re still 2nd in the league only 2 points behind and in the Champions League. Everyone needs to calm down and stop buying the hype

  4. i dont think that the money has been swallowed cause fergie wouldnt stand for that, but i also dont no why he wont fork out we have hardly ever paid good value thats wat seperates us from the dreamers i am however worried about are poor goalkeeping options average midfield(at best)and are poor strike force apart from waza of course…my opinion is thanks for everything fergie your a legend but retire at the end of the season and let mourinho take the job as lets be honest its only a matter of time isnt it?

  5. If Glazers did not buy United, we would have been able to buy at least one world class player year. As it is we are paying for the interest on their loans.

I wonder how will it end?

GLAZERS OUT OF MAN UNITED ASAP
